Quick Answer: Those circular brown or gray patches of matted, crusty grass that appear right after the snow melts are almost always snow mold, a cold-weather turf disease caused by fungi that grow under snow cover, not a sign your lawn is dying. Most lawns only lose their leaf blades, not the grass crowns underneath, so a light raking to break up the matted grass and let air and sun reach the soil is usually enough for it to grow out on its own within a few weeks. The patches that don't bounce back are the ones where the crowns were smothered too long, and those spots need overseeding once the ground warms.



You've been waiting all winter to see grass again, and when the snowbanks finally recede, what's underneath isn't the green lawn you left in November. Instead there are matted, straw-colored or grayish patches, some the size of a dinner plate, some sprawling several feet across, and the grass in them looks flattened, crusted, almost like it's been pressed under a book. It's alarming the first time you see it, especially if you've never had it before, and the instinct is to assume the lawn took real damage over the winter.


In most cases, it didn't. What you're looking at is snow mold, and it's one of the most common things a lawn around Lake Minnetonka deals with after a long, snow-covered winter. It isn't caused by cold or by the snow itself, it's caused by fungi that actually prefer the insulated, damp conditions snow cover creates, and they've been quietly working on your grass blades for months before you ever see the result. Here's what's actually happening under that matted turf, and what it takes to get the lawn looking like a lawn again.

What Snow Mold Actually Is

Snow mold isn't one single problem, it's a couple of related fungal diseases that both need the same thing to get going: snow sitting on grass that's still wet and unfrozen underneath. Once that cover is in place, the fungi that cause it thrive in exactly the dark, damp, near-freezing conditions a snowbank provides, spreading from blade to blade while the lawn is buried and you have no way of seeing it happen.


There are two versions you'll typically run into, and they look a little different once the snow is gone.


Gray snow mold shows up as circular patches, often a foot or more across, of grass that looks bleached tan or straw-colored and matted flat. Right at snowmelt you may even catch a dusting of grayish, lint-like fungal growth clinging to the blades, though that disappears quickly once the area dries out. Look closely at the dead leaves in one of these patches and you can often spot tiny round specks, reddish-brown and barely bigger than a pinhead, embedded in the grass. Those are the fungus's survival structures, and they're how it rides out the summer waiting for next winter's snow.


Pink snow mold tends to form smaller patches, generally under eight inches across, and it announces itself with a reddish-pink to salmon-colored ring or margin around the edge of the dead spot, especially right after the snow is gone and things are still damp. Unlike its gray counterpart, pink snow mold doesn't need snow cover to keep going, it's just as happy in a stretch of cool, overcast, drizzly spring weather, so you can sometimes see it linger or even flare up again weeks after the snowbanks are long gone.


Both are cosmetic more often than they are fatal. The fungi feed on the grass leaves and stems above the crown, and in a mature, healthy lawn, the crown and roots usually survive untouched even when the top growth looks wrecked. That distinction, leaf damage versus crown damage, is what decides whether a patch grows back on its own or needs to be reseeded.

Why Some Lawns Get Hit Harder Than Others

Snow mold doesn't strike evenly across a yard, and if you look at where your worst patches are sitting, there's usually a pattern.


Long grass going into winter 

Grass that's still tall when the snow arrives falls over and mats down more heavily under the weight of snow, creating exactly the dense, damp, airless canopy the fungi want to work in. Lawns mowed down to a reasonable height right up until growth stops tend to come through with lighter damage.


Deep, long-lasting snowbanks

Wherever snow piles up the deepest and sticks around the longest, along driveways, at the base of a slope, next to a fence line where drifts collect, that's where snow mold tends to be worst. The fungi need extended snow cover to really get established, so the spots buried longest take the heaviest hit.


Heavy thatch and matted debris

A thick layer of dead grass and organic debris sitting at the soil surface holds moisture and gives the fungus more to work with, especially for pink snow mold, which favors slow-growing turf sitting in excess thatch.


Too much nitrogen too late in the fallA

Wherever driveway or sidewalk snow gets thrown onto the lawn during the season, you're stacking extra depth and extra duration of cover right on that turf, which is why you'll often see a stripe of snow mold tracing exactly where the shovel or plow put the pile.

Tip: Take a walk around your yard right at snowmelt and note where the worst patches are sitting relative to where snow piled up highest. If the damage lines up with old snowbanks, driveway edges, or shaded low spots that stayed covered longest, that tells you it's an ordinary snow mold pattern tied to this winter's conditions, not something deeper going on with the soil.

Does It Go Away On Its Own, or Does It Need Help?

For most established, healthy lawns, snow mold resolves without much intervention. Once the matted patches are exposed to sun and air, the fungal activity stops cold, since both types of snow mold need cool, damp, low-light conditions to keep spreading, and a dry, sunny spring day takes that away fast. The grass crowns beneath the dead leaves send up new growth, and within a few weeks of consistent spring weather, the patch fills back in and blends into the rest of the lawn.



What speeds that recovery along is breaking up the mat. Matted, crusted grass blocks light and airflow from reaching the crowns and slows drying, so a light raking over the affected patches, just enough to fluff the flattened blades and let the soil surface breathe, gives the lawn a real head start. You're not trying to pull the dead grass out by the roots, just loosening the crust so the area dries and warms like the rest of the yard instead of staying damp and shaded under its own matted debris.


A light application of nitrogen once the lawn starts actively growing again also helps push new leaf growth through the damaged patches faster, closing the gap with the surrounding turf. The lawn doesn't need to be babied through this, it needs airflow, sunlight, and a nudge of growth, and most patches respond within a couple of weeks once the weather cooperates.

When a Patch Doesn't Bounce Back

The patches that don't recover on their own are the ones where the fungus had enough time and cover to reach past the leaves and damage the crown itself, usually where snow sat deepest and longest, where thatch was heaviest, or where the turf was already thin and stressed heading into winter. In those spots, there's no live crown left to regrow from, and raking alone won't bring grass back that isn't there anymore.



You can generally tell the difference by giving a damaged patch a few weeks after cleanup. If you see fresh green blades pushing up through the matted area, the crown survived and it's on track to fill in. If a patch still looks bare, thin, or soil-colored well after the rest of the lawn has greened up and started actively growing, that's a sign the crown didn't make it and the spot needs to be reseeded rather than left to recover on its own.

Warning: Resist the urge to dig up or heavily rake a snow mold patch too early, while the ground is still soft and saturated from the thaw. Working wet turf and wet soil compacts it and tears up crowns that would otherwise have recovered fine, turning a cosmetic patch into a bare spot that actually does need reseeding. Wait until the ground has firmed up and the grass has had a real chance to show whether it's regrowing before you decide a patch needs more than a light cleanup.

Helping the Lawn Recover This Spring

Once you've identified which patches are simply matted and which ones are actually dead at the crown, the recovery splits into two tracks.

For matted patches that still have live crowns, a light raking to break up the crust, followed by keeping up with regular mowing and a light spring fertilization once growth is underway, is typically all it takes. Avoid heavy foot traffic or equipment on those areas until they've filled back in, since compacting an already-stressed patch slows the recovery further.



For patches where the crown didn't survive, the ground needs to be roughed up enough to create decent seed-to-soil contact, seeded with a turf type that matches the rest of the lawn, and kept consistently moist while the new grass establishes. Overseeding those spots in spring, once soil temperatures are warming and there's still reliable moisture, gives new grass its best shot before summer heat sets in.


Either way, the lawn's overall health going into next winter is what determines how bad the next round of snow mold will be. Keeping the mowing height reasonable into late fall, easing off nitrogen as the season winds down, staying on top of thatch, and being mindful of where snow gets piled during the winter all reduce how much matted, damaged turf you're looking at come next thaw.

Reading Your Lawn's Patches Before You Panic

Snow mold looks alarming the moment the snowbanks pull back, but most patches are only surface damage, dead leaf blades sitting on top of crowns that are still very much alive underneath. Give those spots air, sunlight, and a little time, and they typically fill back in without much intervention beyond a light raking. The patches worth watching closely are the ones tied to deep, long-lingering snow cover or turf that was already thin heading into winter, since those are the ones that may need reseeding instead of patience.
